Some interesting facts about the English Alphabet:

  •  The alphabet word comes from the names of the first two letters of the Greek alphabet; alpha and beta.
  • The 26 letters of the English alphabet make up more than 40 distinct sounds. Since there are a lot more sounds than letters, many letters have different pronunciations,e.g. the C in cool sounds different than the C in city.
  • The most common letter in English is "e".
  • The most common vowel in English is "e", followed by "a".
  • The most common consonant in English is "r", followed by "t".
  •  The letter “Z” is the least used in the English language.
  • The letter “S” is the used as the first letter of the most of the words.
  • “Uncopyrightable” is the longest word of the English which has no repeatable letters.
  • “The” word is the most common word of the English.
  • Approximately a new word added in an every two hours in English dictionary and around 4000 new words are added every year.
  • “I am” is the complete sentence of the English language.
  • A sentence that contains all 26 letters of the alphabet is called a "pangram".
  • The "QWERTY keyboard" gains its name from the fact that its first 6 letter keys are Q, W, E, R, T and Y. On early typewriters the keys were arranged in such a way as to minimize the clashing of the mechanical rods that carried the letters.
